The field of Emergency Preparedness is an extremely vast topic with millions of different situations and possibilities to plan for and be proficient in. Each person has a different viewpoint that they have developed given their age, sex, family composition, location, education level, income and personal experiences. A Family Emergency Preparedness Planning Consultant (FEPPC) follows a series of key steps to evaluate the needs of the client and determine the level of resources needed to get the best results. An initial survey is conducted to determine basic facts about the client and to determine what level of knowledge currently exists with in the family. For example, questions asked are as follows: What event, personal emergency or natural disaster do you want to be prepared for? What steps have you taken to prepare for this event? What guide or outline are you using to prepare?
Our role as consultants is to explain the process of preparing and make sure that the role is clearly defined up-front. The role can range from being fully active in the planning process to fully involved in the planning results: or a combination of both.
We can be the trainer and explain what all parts of the process entail. We can be the facilitator and provide assistance in difficult phases. We can be the coach and provide guidance as to what are the best decisions to make. We can be the strategist and guide what approach should be taken. We can be the advocate and actively pursue certain ideas. We can be the stakeholder and have a vested interest in the results.
Our goal is to provide the client with expertise to make the planning process as cost effective as possible and to ensure that the plan has the greatest opportunity to succeed.
As the client: You need to identify what you need the emergency preparedness-planning consultant for. This will indicate how involved you want them to be and also what you need their roles to be in developing your Emergency Preparedness plan.
Having a plan and preparing in advance can turn an unbearable situation into a comfortable inconvenience. Being prepared is being responsible.
